About

Danielle Milne is an emerging artist based in Brisbane. She predominantly paints women because she is a woman and she believes that the stories of women deserve to be told. These stories focus on the personal lives of women. Her hyperreal painting practice is filled with Fashion imagery. Danielle takes images from fashion magazines, film and the Internet, and collages these together to create new narratives. The cut and paste aesthetic of collage and photoshop work in tandem with her slick finish. She deliberately erases the brushstrokes in her paintings to mirror the airbrushed perfection of fashion magazines and to simulate reality.

Striving for perfection through images is considered commonplace in today’s social media landscape. The audience is so accustomed to seeing this type of deception in their daily social media feeds that it makes Danielle’s paintings appear to be based in reality rather than fiction. On first appearance, her paintings are mimicries of easily consumed fashion imagery, yet on reflection they give rise to complex engagements. Her paintings create uncertain narratives. Moreover, Danielle’s flat, collaged aesthetic amplifies the constructed realities in her work. The appearance of perfection acts like a mask, covering the complicated aspects of human behaviour.

Danielle is interested in what occurs when an image made for a transitory platform, such as a fashion magazine, is transformed into a painting. Danielle removes the capitalist function of fashion for sale. Meaning, context and value are radically changed and a new visual language is created.
